IRS: Taxpayers Should Sign Up for an IP PIN for 2025 Tax Season
The IRS encourages taxpayers to sign up for an IP PIN for the 2025 tax season. Here's what you need to know.
With the 2025 tax season approaching, the IRS wants to help keep taxpayers' identities safe.
That is why they have created a simple step to add a key level of security, which can help protect against tax-related identity theft.
What is an IP PIN?
An IP PIN (identity protection personal information number) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a federal tax return using a taxpayer's SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
The IP PIN is known only by the individual and the IRS. It confirms the taxpayer's identity when they electronically file their tax return.
This system makes it much more difficult for thieves and bad actors to fraudulently use a taxpayer's information.
When is the deadline?
The IRS recommends that taxpayers sign up for an IP PIN before November 23rd, 2024.
After this date, their system will undergo maintenance and will not be available again until January 2025.
If one doesn't sign up for the IP PIN by November 23rd, there will be other options, but we recommend getting this done as soon as possible to check it off your list and ensure you will be ready for the 2025 filing season.
How can I request an IP PIN?
The best way to sign up and request an IP PIN is by an IRS Online Account.
Taxpayers can create or log into their online account at IRS.gov and follow the instructions. Once verified, taxpayers can click on the profile tab and request their IP PIN.
This number will be used when filing their federal tax returns for the current calendar year and any previous years filed during that same period.
The IP PIN must also be on both electronic and paper returns.
Additional information
- An IP PIN is valid for one calendar year.
- For security, new IP PINs are generated at the beginning of each calendar year.
- Some participants will receive their IP PIN in the mail, while others will log in to their Online Account to view their current IP PIN.
- IP PIN users should only share their number with the IRS and tax preparation provider.
- The IRS will never call, email, or text a request for the IP PIN. Beware of scammers!
- Spouses and dependents can also obtain an IP PIN if they complete the required verification steps.
